Rachel Reeves

Member of Parliament for Leeds West

Rachel Reeves is the Labour Parliamentary Candidate for Leeds West

Rachel Reeves is the Labour Member of Parliament for Leeds West.

Rachel became active in politics during her time at secondary school, inspired by education cut-backs under the Thatcher and Major governments, which meant her and fellow pupils sharing old textbooks and having lessons in pre-fab huts. She secured a place at Oxford University to read Politics, Philosophy and Economics and later gained an MSc in Economics from the London School of Economics.

Rachel worked as an Economist and remained a committed Labour Party member and activist before choosing to stand as a candidate for the Leeds West parliamentary seat, following John Battle announcing his intention to retire in 2010.

Rachel was elected as the Member of Parliament for Leeds West at the May 2010 General Election. When elected in 2010, she was the first female MP to represent a seat in Leeds since Alice Bacon, who served between 1945 and 1970. She was re-elected at the 2015 and 2017 general elections with increasing majorities.

In Leeds West, Rachel has worked hard to continue the community work pioneered by her predecessor, Rt. Hon. John Battle. She has led the fight to save local swimming pool Bramley Baths, successfully argued for better bus services in the constituency and lobbied for the future of Kirkstall Forge.

Rachel brings a wealth of experience to her role. She is patron of Bramley Elderly Action, and has sat on the board of Bramley and Rodley Community Action and the Leeds Healthy Living Network. Prior to her election, she was a governor at Kirkstall Valley Primary School and Leeds West Academy. Rachel spends her spare time swimming, reading and travelling.
